Do you discover an error on your tax return?
Here’s what you need to know:
1. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) could fix your Mistake.
It is reasonable to think that you’ll want to correct your own mistakes. However, on the other way, it may be better to let the IRS do so. The IRS will take care of the math errors and may find a capitulation for you. If you forgot about your estimated payments, the IRS would apply it for you. These are harmless mistakes that you can let the IRS correct for you.
When the IRS corrects your mistakes, you will receive a letter explaining the adjustment and tell you what steps you need to take, if any.
2. Filing an amended return will be enough for correcting the mistakes.
The IRS may not correct your mistakes or if you made huge mistakes or forgot to report something significant, like your new status as joint filing. In these cases, you will certainly need to correct it. The way to do it is filing an amendment to your filed tax return using a federal Form 1040X Form 1040A, Form 1040EZ, Form 1040NR, Form 1040NR-EZ,
3. Attention to the instructions.
Form 1040 X has only two pages, but it may be confusing to fill it if you do not follow the Instructions.
Form 1040 X is the only way to correct errors and mistakes. The front page of Form 1040X is an abbreviated version of the regular F-1040, so you do not have to repeat filling the F- 1040 or another From from this series
4. A copy of the previously filed return is needed.
In Column A On Form 1040X, you’ll need to write a summary of your originally reported tax return. Watch this video for more help on filling the 1040X
You’ll have to indicate In Column B, any adjustments for items of income, deductions, liabilities, and payments.
You’ll report the correct amounts In Column C. In the way, and they should have presented on the original tax return. Column C will have the totals of A and B.
5. Remember that changes have consequences on other items.
You can see it changing if you change the adjusted gross income (AGI); every item that uses the AGI will be affected. For example, Itemized deductions, tax credit, and the taxable amount for Social Security benefit the same with changing your filing status.
6. You can ask for an amended return even the break disappeared.
There are some changes made by The Tax Cuts and Jobs Acts (TCJA). The tax will be done according to the law that was in effect in the real-time of the amendment report. For example, you can adjust part I at the top of the second page. You can adjust your exemptions and dependents for 2017 even though personal exemptions are not allowed for 2018
7. Tell the IRS what your story is.
On part III on the second page to explain why you are filing this amendment return
You have to be short. It is not a confession or an appeal. Be straight and clear. Use only the relevant facts and reasons for the error. It is not more than asking to correct a mistake. You may be as transparent as short as this sample, I missed reporting income as a result of getting F099 too late, or I forgot to claim a child tax credit.
8. You can not use the e-filing option for amended returns.
Once you finished filling the amendment, you need to print it and send it by mail.
9. Attach the corresponding docs and no more
Copies of the relevant forms or schedules must be attached to the 1040x, including the W-2 and 1099 that is part of the amendment. If you have specific schedules, Form, or papers that you attached previously. Do not attach docs that are nor having real importance.
10. If you owe payments, include it too.
Correcting your mistakes can mean that you own more to the IRS, do not think on anything than sending the payment parallel to the sending of the amendment. Check with the IRS if penalties are Paying Your Taxes.
11. Due to a refund after correcting mistakes.
If your corrections are showing that you are due to a refund, you can leave it for the next year or ask for it to be sent to you by mail.
Remember that you can not file Form104x claim after three years pass the tax year that you made your mistake. Alternatively, after two years from your last tax payment.
12. Statute of limitations.
The rules of the Statute of limitations are applied. Take the note. Your amendment return will not stop the obligation you have with the statute of limitations and due payment.
13. Don’t amend in a bubble.
Remember that the Form 1040x is made for small mistakes and errors; it is not for a significant issue with tax evasion or a large amount of money. These issues will need a consultation with a tax expert or even a tax lawyer.
14. Use the Online Tool “Where’s My Amended Return?”.
You can wait between 8 to 12 weeks or even 16 weeks before you can look for the status of your amendment. Where’s My Amended Return?
- Your amended return will take up to 3 weeks after you mailed it to show up on our system.
- Processing it can take up to 16 weeks.
If your mistakes are not minor, ask for help before filing a 1040X.
